Maths teacher bursaries announced by The Government

The Department for Education has today announced that bursaries of £29,000 are being made available to train secondary school teachers in shortage subjects, including maths.

The Government's announcement also points to a 15 per cent increase in maths trainee teacher numbers in the last year, which begins to close the gap on a chronic issue of under-recruitment dating back to 2012/13.

CaMS chair Professor Jens Marklof said, “Advanced mathematics skills are critical for the UK’s high-tech economy.

“We are facing a chronic shortage of qualified maths teachers across the country with around half of secondary school maths lessons taught by a teacher without a degree in maths.

“Enthusiastic teachers with expertise in the subject are essential to inspire our students and get them into the talent pipeline.

“There is still more work to be done, but this announcement is great news for our amazing pupils and their dedicated teachers.”
