AI makes the case for maths degrees stronger – in the media
CaMS has placed an article by Dr Neil Saunders from City St George’s, University of London in The Conversation. He makes the case that AI could lower barriers to studying mathematics at university and support more people to become research mathematicians.
The piece argues that AI should be viewed as a tool for accelerating mathematical discovery, rather than as a replacement for human mathematicians. It highlights the growing importance of mathematical skills in AI itself, as well as in quantum computing, cyber security and data science .
However, this opportunity comes as university maths provision is under growing pressure. Departmental closures, cuts and recruitment pauses are creating “maths deserts”, making a mathematics degree less accessible for students living outside major metropolitan areas.
If the UK is to realise the potential of AI, innovation and technological growth, it must protect access to mathematics degrees across the country.
