Former chair of the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences Professor Jon Keating has written for Times Higher Education on the pace of change in AI's mathematical capabilities, and the questions this poses for the maths community.
As many mathematicians start their studies at UK universities AI raises fundamental questions about what to teach them and what the subject may look like by the time they graduate or earn their PhD.
He writes that this watershed moment for mathematics must be followed by a considered thinking on how to adapt to this radical change. Without doing so, we run the risk of "missing out on important new ideas and discoveries".
The stakes, as Jon argues, couldn't be higher. Mathematics is a tradition extending back thousands of years, however handling this transition with care promises to usher in "a new age of mathematical discovery and progress".
