Following an oral evidence session held by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, Chair Lord Mair CBE has written to the Secretary of State for Education with a number of recommendations to improve the pipeline of maths talent in the UK.
The Campaign for Mathematical Sciences provided written evidence to the committee and CaMS supporter and teacher Bobby Seagull, gave oral evidence the Committee in March.
Bobby warned the session that the cuts and closures at maths departments at post-1992 universities would have an adverse effect on maths teacher numbers, which are already not being recruited to target nationally. Bobby also drew attention to the harmful impact cuts to the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP) could have on the number of students going on to study maths at undergraduate level, especially that many of these could go on to become teachers themselves.
