On 17-18 November, CaMS was delighted to co-sponsor a two-day conference at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, in partnership with the Isaac Newton Institute and London Mathematical Society.
The Conference, titled “The Future of Mathematics Higher Education”, provided the opportunity for the whole maths community to come together to reflect on the current state of maths higher education, and discuss ways to reimagine university maths provision and encourage more students to take up maths degrees.
Attendees reflected on our Maths Degrees for the Future programme, launched in 2024, which invited university departments to apply for funding grants to create ‘next-gen’ degree designs that connect foundational mathematics to key technological applications such as AI. The five successful applicants were awarded £500,000 each to implement their programmes.
The Campaign would like to thank the Isaac Newton Institute for hosting the event, as well as all attendees for joining us there.
Reflecting on the Conference, CaMS Chair Professor Jens Marklof said: “I was delighted to see the whole maths community come together in Cambridge this week and exchange new and innovative ideas on the future of mathematics in higher education.
“With the emergence of new technologies, the demand for maths skills in the digital economy is growing every year. It is vital for policymakers to recognise that with the right support and recognition, advanced mathematics is the key to strengthening the UK’s comparative advantages in the global economy, unlocking British innovation and driving economic growth.”
