PPM responds to the Prime Minister’s announcement on ‘Maths to 18’
On Monday 17th April 2023, the Prime Minster outlined his vision to ensure that every pupil would study mathematics up to the age of 18.
A key part of his speech focussed on an ‘anti-maths mindset’ that was prevalent across the UK, both in and out of schools. Arguing that the UK’s future economic growth depending on improved numeracy and data analysis skills, the Prime Minister said:
“We have to fundamentally change our education system so it gives our young people the knowledge and skills they need - and that our businesses need – to compete with the best in the world.”
In response to the Prime Minister’s speech, Professor Ulrike Tillmann, President of the London Mathematical Society and the Campaign to Protect Pure Maths said:
"Maths is critical to the future success of our nation’s young people, and we greatly welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to strengthening the maths talent pipeline.
"The world is changing and maths to 18 will help prepare the next generation for a job market that is more data-driven and requires quantitative skills at all levels."
