Professor Mark Chaplain FRSE, Gregory Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, has been nominated President of the London Mathematical Society, and will now serve as Chair of the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences.
Professor Chaplain’s research in multiscale mathematical modelling has been world-leading in understanding cancer growth and paving the way for new treatments, and his contributions to the mathematical sciences community stretch back decades, having previously served as President of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.
CaMs would like to pay tribute to the exceptional work of our outgoing campaign Chair, Professor Jens Marklof, who has played a leading role in advocating for maths and making the case for growing the subject at all levels of the pipeline. He was President of the London Mathematical Society at the time of the first Maths Summit in 2024 and more recently drove through the establishment of the innovative Maths Degrees for the Future programme.
Commenting on his appointment, Professor Chaplain said:
“I am delighted to take on the role of Chair of CaMS and to continue their work making the case for mathematics to government.
“The importance of the mathematical sciences to our future cannot be overstated. Especially given the rapid growth of frontier sectors including AI, cyber and quantum computing, there has never been a more vital time to invest in maths to place the UK in pole position to innovate in these technologies. I look forward to making the case publicly and to politicians to support maths and boost prosperity across the UK.”
