Members of the Senedd (MSs) are raising the issue directly with the Welsh Government.
Yesterday there was a debate in the Senedd, tabled by Jenny Rathbone, the MS representing Cardiff Central. In her contribution she shared the mathematical sciences community's concerns over the potential consequences for mathematics and highlighted the importance of maths skills to the Welsh economy:
She mentioned her meeting with CaMS chair Professor Jens Marklof and highlighted the open letter's calls for the university to pull back from its proposals to let go of 27% of their total maths staff:
Natasha Asghar MS, the Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Education has also tabled two questions on university maths provision in Wales, while the Welsh Conservatives have published a press release which warns against the wider impacts this will have to the Welsh economy and its maths teacher pipeline.
As she outlines in her answers, the Minister for Further and Higher Education Vikki Howells has suggested the Welsh Government may be inclined to intervene to "ensure the continuation of strategically important subject areas in Wales", and she highlighted several funding grants which were being made available to help support the Welsh higher education sector.
