XTX Markets donates £26m to UK university maths research

XTX Markets has donated a combined £26m to seven UK universities, to help fund more than 100 PhD and post-doctoral pure maths research positions at universities across the UK.

 

The funding is directed at attracting top talent to UK institutions, which CEO of XTX Markets Alex Gerko attributes to years of historic underfunding in the subject. The universities that stand to benefit are Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Warwick and Imperial College London, with the funding going toward entry for candidates starting from next year.

 

Simon Coyle, head of philanthropy at XTX, commented that maths funding “is being decimated”, with Centres for Doctoral Training being scaled back.

 

Simon added, “if you take the government’s goals and strategies at face value, they imply a significant need for more mathematicians and quantitative talent. AI is basically maths [and] fundamentally that is maths talent”.
