Lib Dem peer Baroness Garden calls for more mathematicians in The House Magazine

In the latest issue of The House magazine, Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords Baroness Garden wrote about the importance of increasing interest in mathematics at all levels of education in order for the UK to continue as a world-leading maths superpower.

Baroness Garden also highlighted the “increasingly alarming signs” that the Government is going to renege on the remainder of the pledged £300m in additional research funding for mathematical sciences. “Investing in maths has the potential to repay that investment in spades,” she wrote.

Writing about the dinner she hosted under the auspices of Protect Pure Maths, Baroness Garden noted the "illuminating and challenging discussion” which highlighted how parliamentarians “ought to understand just how much maths provides the bedrock on which our modern society is built”.

A healthy supply of mathematicians is fundamental to an economy and society that function efficiently to the benefit of all,” Baroness Garden wrote.

The article was accompanied by maths puzzles from Oxford University tutor and maths communicator Dr Tom Crawford, who is also known as Tom Rocks Maths.
