Write to your MP about Maths’ Missing Millions

We would be grateful for your help in holding the Government accountable on its promise for this essential research funding for mathematical sciences. Write to your MP using the text below. You can find out who your local MP is here: https://members.parliament.uk/FindYourMP.

Dear [MP Name],I am contacting you on behalf of the Protect Pure Maths campaign, which has been founded in collaboration with the London Mathematical Society to promote and protect maths. In January 2020, the Government announced an investment of £300m additional funding into the mathematical sciences.

During an evidence session for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology on 15 June, UKRI Chief Executive Dame Ottoline Leyser DBE FRS said that this promised £300m of ringfenced, additional funding for research into the mathematical sciences has not been received by UKRI.

Mathematics enables today’s most exciting and urgent technological developments, including artificial intelligence, driverless cars, the development of quantum computers, and superfast broadband. Maths underpins national security and the finance sector, and it has been vital to modelling the Covid-19 outbreak and the rollout of vaccinations. Without explicit support for all the mathematical sciences, this will be at risk.We would be extremely grateful if you could commit to putting in for a debate or an oral question to BEIS calling on this investment to be reaffirmed.

Yours sincerely,
